Königsfelden stained glass windowsEuropean stained glass at its apexWith the foundation of Königsfelden, the Habsburgs not only constructed a convent to remind them of the death of King Albrecht but also a memorial place to underline the significance of the ambitious dynasty of the 14th century. The iconographic programme and donations in the choir and nave have a different significance and are not all from the same era. The windows in the church of Königsfelden, which were created between 1320 and 1360, are among some of the most magnificent works of European stained glass in the late Middle Ages. You can view all stained glass windows here, some of which are shown in detail. Click on a red dot in the outline to view the window in question!
Preservation and restoration of the stained glass windows There is no doubt that the stained glass windows have suffered from the turbulent history surrounding the church and convent. The separation of the choir and the construction of a granary in the nave in 1777 have made the windows dispensable. Practically the only remaining elements are those which were put there after having been lost in the choir. Radical renovation of the windows was undertaken by stained glass artist Richard Nüscheler between 1896 and 1900 and, as far as possible, the windows were reconstructed to take account of the original concept. The extensive restoration and conservation of the choir windows in the years between 1988 and 2002, with very few exceptions, took account of this reconstruction.
