Education & Research

Primary and middle schools, as well as preparatory schools and the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland are public education institutions in Canton Aargau.
The University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, with departments of Technology, Economics, Architecture, Life Sciences, Applied Psychology, Social Work, and Art and Design ensure advancement and instruction in innovation. With the establishment of the Technopark Aargau, the Cantonal Government supports knowledge transfer from university institutes to the private economy. Five universities and three further universities of applied sciences are located within a radius of an hour’s drive.

Foreign families can send their children to the international school in the Canton of Aargau. In August 2008, Zurich International School opened its ZIS Baden Campus. Zurich International School is a non-profit day school offering a comprehensive education program for students aged 2 to 18 in the greater Zurich and Baden areas. Over 1,400 students from more than 55 countries attend one of the school’s five campuses. ZIS is an International Baccalaureate (IB) Organisation World School and is accredited by both the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges in the U.S. ZIS is also officially approved by the Departments of Education of the Cantons of Zurich and Aargau.

The nation’s largest research institute, the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), is located in our region. The PSI is a multi-disciplinary research institute for natural and engineering sciences which cooperates closely with national and international universities and industry. Areas of expertise include solid state research and materials sciences, elementary particle physics and physical astronomy, biology and medicine, energy and environmental research.

Renowned international enterprises such as ABB and Alstom maintain their research facilities in Canton Aargau. The government of Aargau specially promotes cutting-edge technologies such as nanotechnology. With its strong orientation towards Plastics and Materials Technology, Machines and Life Sciences, nanotechnology is of particular interest for the economy in Aargau.
