Building Permits

In principle all investments in buildings require a permit. Foremost, the local municipal authority is responsible for the building permit procedure, and can issue the necessary permit. For special projects involving for example large investments, non zone-compliant construction or landmark buildings, a cantonal permit is necessary. In such situations your construction project will be reviewed by the Cantonal Building Permits Division (Abteilung für Baubewilligungen).

As a One-Stop-Shop, Aargau Services accompanies you through the entire permit and construction process. An initial assessment of your construction project can be carried out by Aargau Services. To accelerate decisions, it is expedient to communicate with the correct contact persons and decision makers right from the start. As a One-Stop-Shop, Aargau Services assumes the necessary mediator function. We bring investors face-to-face with contact persons from the municipalities and the Canton, and see your project through.

You can find important information on the topic of building permits in the Building Permits Division within the Department of Construction, Transport and Environment.

Your building requires a permit if it affects the neighborhood or the general public (especially in case of danger or disadvantagement). A permit is also needed if different building regulations are valid for the modified building. The building administration of the local municipal authority is responsible for the building permit procedure; the permit is usually issued by the municipality. Should your project require a cantonal permit, the Building Permits Division reviews your application. This is necessary for example for buildings that stand outside the zoning limits, or if the building is under landmark protection.
